Discolored Water Event
We are aware that some residents are experiencing discolored water throughout the District and want to provide an update on what occurred and the steps we are taking to resolve the issue.
Earlier today, an apparent programming issue at our water treatment plant caused a valve to remain open during a routine filter cleaning cycle. As a result, some discolored water entered our treated water storage system and was subsequently distributed to homes throughout the community.
The water remains safe to drink and use. The discoloration is primarily caused by iron, a naturally occurring mineral found in our groundwater. While the water may appear yellow, brown, or reddish, the iron itself does not pose a health concern at the levels typically found in drinking water. However, it can cause temporary staining of clothing, sinks, toilets, and other plumbing fixtures. We recommend avoiding laundry, particularly with light-colored clothing, until the water has cleared.
What We Are Doing
Our operations team is actively working with our emergency response contractor to flush the distribution system. Flushing involves opening fire hydrants at strategic locations throughout the community to move water through the system at higher velocities, helping remove discolored water and restore normal water clarity.
During this process, residents may temporarily notice increased discoloration as water moves through the system. This is expected and should improve as flushing progresses.
What Residents Can Do
If you are experiencing discolored water, we recommend running cold water from a bathtub faucet or another high-flow fixture for several minutes to help clear your home's plumbing. Avoid using hot water until the cold water runs clear, as this can help prevent discolored water from entering your water heater.
We understand that discolored water can be concerning and apologize for the inconvenience. Our team is working to identify the extent of the affected areas and restore normal water clarity as quickly as possible.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
